Sprint Acquires Virgin Mobile USA

As corporate announcements go, this one more acquisition could go rather unnoticed for us consumers.

Sprint Buys Virgin Mobile

This is how press release puts it:

This acquisition will strengthen Sprint’s position in the growing prepaid segment by bringing together under one umbrella the iconic Virgin Mobile brand with Sprint’s successful Boost Mobile business.

So what?

Well, it does show that importance and popularity of prepaid plans finally has been noticed by the big company.

What’s more interesting is that Virgin Mobile’s Broadband2Go is so far the only pay as you go option for mobile broadband connection in the USA.

It would be extremely interesting to see if Sprint will go as far as introducing their own Pay as You Go mobile data plan, and whether AT&T and Verizon will follow suit (of course they will :)).

Today, however, “Virgin’s Broadband2Go” remains a proud solitary contract-less option on the market.
