AT&T USBConnect Lightning is the latest addition to the diverse AT&T mobile broadband modems lineup.
Produced by Sierra Wireless, it is also known as Sierra Wireless USB305, and is the first HSPA/HSUPA modem capable of lightning 7.2Mpbs downloads and 5.76 Mbps uploads (theoretical limits, real data rates tend to be slower) where the network supports it.
The Lightning is quite small and attractive black glossy stick at 3.1“x1.4“x0.5” and weighting only 1.6 oz. With swivel “ultra-flexible” USB hinge, which impressively rotates over 2 axes, it should fit quite nicely in tight spaces and with closely located USB ports. It could be used in multiple orientations, allowing to optimize orientation to the best signal strength.
If the sviwel is not good enough, the modem could be connected via extension USB cable and attached to the laptop lid using enclosed clip.
There are two nice LEDs on the backside – power and data that allow to understand the device and connection status. When connected to 3G network, the indicator lights up in blue, whereas if the connection is 2G, the color will be amber.
Modem uses AT&T Connection Manager software, that installs seamlessly and quickly, and allowes seamless roaming with AT&Ts WiFi hotspots, cutting your mobile broadband bill where possible.
Since it’s HSPA modem, it supports real Worldwide connectivity over UMTS/HSPA 3G networks including Europe and Japan (watch out for roaming charges though…). It is capable of real HSPA speeds:
up to 7.2 Mbps download and up to 2 Mbps upload.
With speeds faster than the average home broadband connection you can respond to emails, access the Web and stay in touch with the latest news and current events. The USBConnect Lightning offers triband UMTS support for the 850, 900,2100 MHz bands, and quad band GSM/EDGE support for 850, 1900, 1800 and 2100 MHz bands, offering frequent travelers the freedom to roam globally on HSPA networks. As well, with Receive Diversity on the 850, 900, and 2100 MHz bands, the modem is optimized for greater data throughputs, fewer dropped connections resulting in a better user experience throughout the network.
Unlike EvDO modems, the Lightning does not have built in GPS, but features an expandable microSD™ memory slot for up to 32 GB of additional storage.
This amazing modem is so new, that there are no external reviews yet.
